Spring is in the air but is it in your step? Or in your heart?
Well, we are just about two months into 2012 and as usual, all those people who joined a gym after Christmas with great enthusiasm are now starting to see that enthusiasm wane and with it the number of visits that they make to the gym. Why is it however, that so many of us continue paying for our gym membership after we stop going, in the forlorn hope that we will “get back into the habit”?
The weather has been interesting (in the Chinese sense perhaps) in my garden. I’m still waiting for the daffodils to flower. However, whole “fields of hope” planted in support of the Marie Curie charity and grass verges have seen their daffodils finish flowering. I blame the squirrels for eating a high proportion of the bulbs planted in my garden over the last five or so years!
But what about our businesses? If Spring is not in your step or in your heart (or both) then your morale and that of your colleagues will be adversely affected, and this in turn will affect your business. So what can we do?
One answer, perhaps, is in our choice of New Year’s resolutions! So what about some resolutions which are not necessarily time-consuming, or indeed difficult to keep?
Here are some suggestions:
Plan how you want your business to grow- set aside the time you need to make it happen. Try something new in a controlled way to test out whether it will work for you Attend an extra networking meeting regularly – perhaps in an area new to you Ask for recommendations in a professional manner rather than as if asking for a favour Look with whom you can collaborate instead of competing Make appointments for yourself and your friends and family….. and keep them Avoid “not words” those which project a negative e.g. “How are you… Not Bad”. Why not say” Great!” and see what a difference this makes And my pet hate on this subject- never use “No problem” it devalues what you have just done in the eyes of the person who thanked you- “ My pleasure” or” that’s what we are here for” engender a completely different feeling!
So which of these would make the most difference for you?
I cannot answer that for you, but I can suggest that doing things that improve the way that you feel about yourself, or the way that others feel about you, will make a great deal of difference to your appetite to get on and do whatever it is you want to achieve in your business.

Equally, there will be things that our clients may need which we do not provide. Here there is the opportunity to introduce work to others or, just as importantly, for others to introduce work to us!
In all those businesses which are generally selling their time there is always a tension between the time spent on delivery (which can be invoiced) and promotion (which cannot). Therefore, if one can acquire additional work via someone else or indeed pass work on to someone else and in both cases, pay or be paid for it, this will help to increase our profitability.

One serious competitor to many of our businesses is the DIYer, and this has affected many sectors within the market, including graphic design, print, photography, Web design etc. The person who goes out to look for their preferred purchase in a local retailer and then seeks to buy more cheaply online is not dissimilar from the person who discusses their “problem” with a consultant or specialist in their field, listens carefully to what they say and then tries to go and do it for himself.
